DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Documentation and Publications Management (C/DPM), the incumbent will oversee the work of the translation and publishing support teams, in all official languages, and will perform the following duties:

(a) Organize the work of the teams to support the implementation of the quarterly Publications Production Plans; provide guidance and instructions to the staff;

(b) Monitor and coordinate all work in progress and all outgoing work of the Division, and resolve all outstanding queries;

(c) Interact with the Chief on the feasibility and time delivery of the proposed and planned production of correspondence, documentation and publications;

(d) Ensure that workflow-related records are updated and correct;

(e) Report to Chief on performance of staff and prepare work plans and performance appraisal reports on all staff of the Division;

(f) Oversee training of new and short-term staff of the Division in the in-house styles and publishing standards, as well as in electronic copy preparation and publications production processes;

(g) Oversee the development of electronic templates, technical specifications and style sheets for the production of publications and documentation;

(h) Assure continuity of style in serially produced publications and conformity to WMO publishing standards;

(i) Perform extensive research on substantive issues related to publications;

(j) Edit electronic manuscripts of publications, ensuring accuracy of content, terminology, grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established WMO style;

(k) Check concordance of text with texts of other official languages to ensure substantive and typographical conformity;

(l) Assume full and final responsibility for the quality control of the relevant publications, sign off the final files for electronic publishing, web posting and archiving;

(m) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree in languages, translation or publishing; degree in a technical field closely related to the work of WMO, coupled with a degree in editing, translation or publishing. Demonstrated experience in these fields would be an advantage. Having passed the United Nations competitive examination for Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors would also be an advantage.

Experience
At least eight years of recent continuous experience in editing, translation and/or publishing in a governmental or an international organization, preferably in the United Nations system. Familiarity with the preparation of scientific publications and of documents for international conferences and meetings. Demonstrated ability in editing, translating and/or publishing scientific material. Excellent knowledge of publishing and layout standards. Knowledge of terminology in the field of meteorology, hydrology or related disciplines would be an advantage.

Other requirements
Excellent command of Microsoft Office applications and computer-assisted translation tools. Interest in new language-related software. Knowledge of publishing software would be an asset. Sense of integrity, responsibility, and maturity of judgment. Ability to work autonomously, under pressure and shift attention rapidly from one job to another. Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage multiple workloads simultaneously. Proven supervisory, managerial, interpersonal, analytical and negotiation skills. Understanding of the overall purpose of published material and acute attention to detail; familiarity with the work of WMO structure and activities would be an advantage. Ability to draft and finalize reports, correspondence and documents clearly and succinctly. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English and working knowledge of other official languages of the Organization.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 77326

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 57763 (in addition to the net base salary)
