DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Director, Language, Conference and Publishing (LCP) Services Department, and the direct supervision of the Chief, Documentation and Publications Management (C/DPM), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Edit and/or copy-edit a variety of WMO publications, ranging from general to technical, relying on the WMO English Style Guide and guidance from senior colleagues;

(b) Copy-edit correspondence and documentation prepared for constituent body sessions of WMO;

(c) Use various publishing software and platforms in the editorial process in order to prepare efficiently the publications for downstream processing and publishing;

(d) Provide guidance to external collaborators and in-house authors on the WMO editorial policy and quality standards;

(e) Participate in the development of editorial policies; advise other members of the Secretariat on English editorial matters; counsel and assist external editors on relevant WMO procedures, in consultation with senior colleagues and/or technical experts;

(f) During WMO conferences and meetings, act as report writer or team leader, when required;

(g) Translate and revise a variety of technical and administrative documents, using computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation; if required, occasionally translate from English into second language;

(h) When necessary, interpret at WMO meetings;

(i) Participate in terminology work and other language-related projects;

(j) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree or equivalent higher education qualification in languages, editing, translation or a technical field closely related to the work of WMO. Having passed the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English-language Copy Preparers, Proofreaders, Production Editors, or the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English Editors or the United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English Translators/Précis-writers would be an advantage.

Experience
A minimum of five years of recent continuous experience in editing and translation in an international organization, of which two years in the United Nations system. Familiarity with the WMO subject matter, as well as with the preparation of reports and documents for international conferences and meetings. Demonstrated ability in editing and translation, using publishing software, and ability to manage several tasks and shift priorities. Knowledge of meteorology, hydrology or related disciplines would be an advantage.

Other requirements
Professional command of publishing software and platforms for editing, computer-assisted translation tools and machine translation. Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines while maintaining high levels of output and required standards of quality. Understanding of the overall purpose of published material and of editing responsibilities. Sense of responsibility, flexibility, maturity of judgement, initiative, originality of ideas and ability to work independently and in a team. Ability to work in a multicultural environment as a team member and to foster diversity and team spirit. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Good health permitting travel to any area of the world.

Languages
English as a principal language essential. Excellent knowledge of French and one of the other WMO official languages.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 64121

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 43410 (in addition to the net base salary)
