DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Director, Language, Conference and Publishing (LCP) at World Meteorological Organization, the incumbent will:

1. Translate, subject to revision, documents from English into Chinese, respecting deadlines, using appropriate terminology and observing the WMO Style Guide;
2. Use all sources of reference, information and consultation relevant to the text at hand and carry out any research required;
3. Identify new terminology material and submit it for the consideration of revisers; assist colleagues at the LCP Linguistic Services Support Unit in the indexing and alignment of publications and other related tasks;
4. Edit a variety of WMO publications, relying on the WMO Editorial Guide and guidance from senior colleagues; learn to use Typefi for automated publishing for print, online and mobile;
5. Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Applicants must at the time of application be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in languages, translation or a field closely related to the work of WMO.

Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.

Other requirements
The incumbent must aim at a high standard of accuracy, consistency and faithfulness to the spirit, style and nuances of the original, observe the established terminology and usage, and ensure, as far as possible, consistency with other translators working on similar documents. Sense of responsibility, detail-oriented, initiative, ability to work in a team. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Excellent written and oral communication. Some knowledge of the activities of WMO or other United Nations agencies.

Languages
Chinese as a principal language essential. Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of another WMO official language would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
