DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of specialized activities that relate to strengthening the capacity of WMO Members to deliver marine and coastal services;
 Analyses and monitors the state of marine and coastal service delivery for countries in need of support from WMO. This includes for matters related to maritime safety, early warnings for coastal populations and services for specific themes such as marine environmental emergency response, sea ice and polar issues;
 In collaboration with United Nations partners, contributes to the planning and facilitation of workshops, meetings and interactive sessions for the WMO Standing Committee for Marine Meteorology and Ocean Affairs and associated expert teams related to maritime safety, coastal inundation/storm surge, sea ice, environmental emergency response, wave and ocean forecasting, both in Geneva and on-site at various National Meteorological and Hydrological Services;
 Assists and engages in the management of communications to National Marine Service Focal Points;
 Carries out research and activities to assist all of the above, and in addition, support to WMO's involvement in international ocean activities (eg. UN Ocean Decade for Sustainable Development, the UN Ocean Conference, the COP);
 Participate in reviews and assessments of national service capabilities;
 Contributes to the development of reports, publications and tools on the implementation of all of the above work activities;
 Supports coordination of activities related to budget and funding, including programme strategy and annual activity reports, progress reports, and assists in preparing related documents;
 Will be responsible for activities related to all of the above - depending on the priorities at the time of duty;
 Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
MSc or equivalent master's degree from a recognized university or technical institute in earth science including oceanography, marine/coastal science, geomorphology, meteorology, hydrology, physics, engineering, computer science or other relevant field of study (preferably with exposure to or interest in marine and coastal science).

Experience
A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas: Weather, climate (generally) and/or marine /coastal observations or observing systems, services, statistics, data analysis, data visualization, GIS, data management, communication of science, data policy for scientific data.

Other requirements
Ability to work efficiently in a multicultural environment Interest in societal, technical and policy-related issues pertaining to weather and climate observations. Good communication skills.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.

- Fluency in English and Korean
- Completed university with a Master’s
- A certificate of English language proficiency * Applicants should submit a minimum of iBT TOEFL score of 107 or NEW TEPS score of 452 or TEPS score of 800
- Be no older than 32 years of age as of 31st December of 2020 (Born after Jan. 1 1988) (The maximum age limit for those who served in the military will be extended accordingly)
- Male applicants should complete the Korean military service or be exempted
