DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Chief of the Atmospheric Environment Research (AER) Division, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Keep abreast of developments in, and new requirements for, the observations and modelling of the chemical composition and physical characteristics of the atmosphere, especially of those related to air pollution and atmospheric deposition for the implementation of the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme, working closely with the relevant GAW groups;

(b) Coordinate training activities within GAW and between other WMO departments and GAW;

(c) Support implementation of the outreach strategy within the GAW Programme;

(d) Support activities of the GAW Central Facilities and GAW Quality Assurance system;

(e) Support activities related to exchange between the atmosphere and other media (including the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP));

(f) Assist in the organization of appropriate expert meetings, symposia, conferences, training workshops and other activities relevant to GAW;

(g) Prepare relevant correspondence and technical documents;

(h) Act as WMO/GAW focal point for collaboration with relevant international organizations and research projects as required;

(i) Develop GAW products and services and enhance ties to user communities;

(j) Provide Secretariat support for relevant constituent bodies of WMO and the Commission on Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) groups;

(k) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree in atmospheric chemistry, physics, geophysics, meteorology or a closely related field. A Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences would be an advantage.

Experience
At least eight years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in atmospheric composition research, observations and analysis, air pollution, atmospheric deposition, chemical transformations and exchange processes. Good understanding of current drivers and needs in the field. Experience in atmospheric modelling would be an advantage. Experience in organizing meetings, writing and reviewing technical reports, international collaboration and project coordination would be an advantage.

Other requirements
Good understanding of broader-scale phenomena such as life cycle of air pollutants, prediction techniques and observation techniques. Sound understanding of the relevant policy issues and socio-economic relevance of research. Sense of responsibility, maturity of judgement, initiative; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Proven ability to draft reports and documents in English. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 77326

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 56371 (in addition to the net base salary)
