DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall supervision of the Director, Language, Conference and Publishing Services (D/LCP), and direct supervision of the Chief, Documentation and Publications Management (C/DPM), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Edit electronic manuscripts of publications, checking concordance against the English original, ensuring accuracy of content, terminology, grammar, syntax, punctuation, spelling and conformity with established WMO style;

(b) Manage the preparation of publications from editing to page layout, coordinating with other publishing staff;

(c) Assure continuity of style in serially produced publications and conformity to WMO publishing standards;

(d) Perform extensive research on substantive issues related to publications;

(e) Assume full and final responsibility for the quality control of the relevant publications in Russian;

(f) Revise, edit and when needed translate from English into Russian administrative, legal, scientific and technical texts or publications; provide summary translations of Russian correspondence and similar into English;

(g) Participate in meetings on terminology issues and decide on editorial solutions for publishing; counsel and assist external translators and editors on relevant WMO procedures;

(h) During WMO conferences and meetings, work in shifts or be on duty call, including on week-ends, when required;

(i) Provide guidance in terminology work or other language-related duties;

(j) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree or equivalent higher education qualification in languages or translation; degree in a technical field closely related to the work of WMO coupled with a degree in editing or translation or demonstrated editorial/translation experience would be an advantage. Having passed the United Nations competitive examination for Russian editors/translators would also be an advantage.

Experience
At least eight years of recent continuous experience in editing and/or translation in a governmental or an international organization, or a large-scale private company of which three preferably in a United Nations system. Familiarity with the preparation of scientific publications and of documents for international conferences and meetings. Demonstrated ability in editing and translating scientific material. Good knowledge of publishing and layout standards. Knowledge of terminology in the field of meteorology, hydrology or related disciplines would be an advantage.

Other requirements
Excellent command of Microsoft Office applications and computer-assisted translation tools. Interest in new language-related software. Knowledge of publishing software would be an asset. Ability to work autonomously, under pressure and shift attention rapidly from one job to another. Understanding of the overall purpose of published material and attention to detail. Strong communication skills, both oral and written. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Russian as a principal language essential. Excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of French and one of the other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 77326

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 57763 (in addition to the net base salary)
