DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the general supervision of the Senior Internal Auditor and the overall responsibility of the Director, IOO the intern will assist IOO in providing an independent, objective verification of financial, administrative and operational activities of WMO. The intern will perform the following duties:

Planning and programming of Internal Audit Activities
- Assist in the development of the Plan of Work of IOO using appropriate risk assessment methodologies;
- Assist in reviewing and/or updating internal audit methods and procedures, as well as keep abreast of professional trends in other international organizations; and
- Participate in the training efforts designed to familiarize WMO staff and/or key stakeholders with enterprise risk management (ERM) processes, as well as audit methods and procedures.


Implementation of Internal Audit Activities
- Assist in planning, conducting and reporting on internal audit engagements covering financial, administrative and operational aspects of WMO;
- Assist in the execution of a wide range of internal audits, i.e. desk reviews and audits of field operations, including any background studies or research required;
- Contribute in proposals for increasing efficiency and effectiveness of WMO Programmes and operations as a result of internal audit, assurance or consulting services; and
- Assist in implementing a Quality Assurance and Improvement Programme (QAIP).


Reporting on Internal Audit Activities
- Present and discuss observations and relevant recommendations on internal audit engagements to the auditees;
- Provide input in draft reports on internal audit activities, backed by appropriately organized working papers;
- Assist in the follow up on implementation of audit recommendations by evaluating the responses/actions taken by management; and
- Provide input for the preparation of the IOO Annual Activity Report.


Other Internal Oversight Activities
- As an additional resource person, may be required to participate in investigations into allegations of fraud, waste, or mismanagement;
- Assist in inspections, thematic/programme/project evaluations, monitoring activities, management reviews, or performance audits conducted by IOO; and
- Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
University degree in accounting, auditing, finance or related areas.

Experience
Previous internship in audit or related areas is desirable.

Other requirements
Sense of responsibility, detail-oriented, maturity of judgement, initiative, ability to work in a team. Proven ability to draft reports and documents and give presentations. Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal and analytical skills. Some knowledge of the activities of WMO or other United Nations agencies and the donor’s landscape. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English. A good working knowledge of French is desirable.

Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
