DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall guidance of the Head, Hydrology and Water Resources Services Division (H/HWR), and the direct supervision of a Project Officer in HWR, the intern will be selected for one or more areas of work within HWR:
 Central Asia and Afghanistan Flood Early Warning System
 Climate Resilient Early Warning System (CREWS)
 Hydrological capacities assessments
 Hydrological Status and Outlook System (HydroSOS)
 Water resources assessments and Dynamic Water Resources Assessment Tool (DWAT)
 Associated Programme on Flood Management and Integrated Drought Management Programme
 Flash flood Guidance System (FFGS)
 WMO regional hydrological activities
 Capacity development and training for hydrology

The intern will perform the following duties:
- Assist in the review, analysis and development of technical materials and project documents;
- Support the verification of hydrological products for selected projects
- Assist in reporting of selected project activities and their outcomes
- Support the Project Officer for the coordination and follow up of selected project efforts.
- Assist with the engagement of experts from different WMO activities on topic related to the selected projects
- Assist in preparing and presenting summaries of information and presentations, as assigned by the supervisor
- Support web-content management related to the assigned project or activity
- Carry-out other relevant tasks commensurate with the role of an intern in WMO
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Bachelor degree in civil engineering, hydrology, hydrometeorology, environmental sciences or related fields. Good knowledge of one or more of the following:
 hydrological models and forecasting, and meteorological forecasting systems and satellite data,
 water resources assessment methods and tools,
 flood and/or drought management,
 capacity building for hydrology,
 Integrated water resources management.


Experience
Work experience is not required. Any experience with international organizations and operational hydrology will be an asset.

Other requirements
Strong Interpersonal Skills, good analytical skills, familiarity with modern computer Software, Internet and Office Software, sense of responsibility, detail-oriented, initiative, ability to work in a team, and ability to work in a multicultural and diverse environment. Some knowledge of the activities of WMO or other United Nations agencies related to the environment and water resources is an asset


Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken) is mandatory. Knowledge of Russian, Dari, Turkmen, or Spanish would be an advantage.
