DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is located in the Earth System Prediction Division of the Infrastructure Department of WMO. The Earth System prediction Division coordinates, together with global experts, the Global Data Procession and Forecasting System (GDPFS) that provides the global framework for distribution of modelling and prediction products to support the service delivery of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services. Key responsibilities include support to the Standing Committee on Earth System Modelling and Prediction of the Infrastructure Commission, monitoring the implementation of the GDPFS in Earth system domains and facilitating the development of the operational Earth system prediction systems at advanced GDPFS centres. Under the supervision of the Head of Earth System Prediction Division (H/ESP), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Provide overall programmatic support to Global Data-processing and Forecasting System (GDPFS) Programme as directed by the Head of ESP Division;

(b) Support the Head of ESP Division with regards to the development and implementation of the seamless GDPFS;

(c) Collect and review data and information on activities related to Earth System prediction including operational numerical weather prediction (NWP), analyse issues and trends and develop reports;

(d) Support the activities of the Standing Committee on Data-processing for Applied Earth System Modeling and Prediction (SC-ESMP), especially the Joint Expert Team on Earth System Implementation (JET-ESI);

(e) Contribute to the preparation of various written output, e.g. draft background papers and meeting reports;

(f) Support relevant meetings of WMO constituent bodies and their working structures, e.g. by preparation of invitations, agendas, input documents and presentations, and in the preparation of reports, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.;

(g) Support coordination of workflows within and across departments, including to ensure smooth functioning of administrative processes;

(h) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Master's degree or equivalent in meteorology, hydrology, oceanography or related discipline within the physical sciences sciences. A higher degree in these areas would be an advantage.

Experience
A minimum of five years of combined national and international progressively responsible experience in developing and implementing Earth System prediction (including numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, climate modeling or similar quantitative modeling discipline).

Other requirements
Ability to analyse and evaluate scientific and technical needs and requreiments; high sense of integrity, responsibility, and maturity of judgment; ability to work autonomously; good level of initiative and creativity; demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage multiple workloads; ability to draft reports, and position papers clearly and succinctly in English in the area of Earth System sciences; excellent knowledge of ICT skills. Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 70212

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 46831 (in addition to the net base salary)
