DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the the overall guidance of the Director of the Science and Innovation (D/SI) and the direct supervision of the Head of the World Climate Research Division (H/WCR), the incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Provide overall programmatic support to key World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) science activities including liaising with Core Projects, their associated International Project Offices, and other core WCRP activities, with a particular focus on activities that advance climate prediction and simulation capabilities;

(b) Work with relevant activities to provide regular budget and funding updates, and assist the Head of Division in identifying possible additional sources of funding;

(c) Liaise and coordinate with the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) in the SI Department, as well as other activities as appropriate (e.g., ensuring connections with WMO Technical Commissions, the Research Board and other WCRP co-sponsored activities);

(d) Work closely with the staff in the Division to jointly meet key objectives;

(e) Maintain current knowledge of climate research progress relevant to the WCRP;

(f) Work with colleagues to identify and support opportunities for early career, underrepresented, and developing country researchers;

(g) Represent the WCRP (and when appropriate the SI Department) in national and international meetings, as required;

(h) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Master's degree or equivalent in Climate Science, Earth System Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Cryosphere Sciences or a closely related field. A Ph.D. would be an advantage.

Experience
At least five years of national and international progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in a relevant climate, Modelling, Earth System Science or a global change field.

Other requirements
Ability to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate assigned programmes and projects. Ability to plan, organize and manage the work with minimum supervision. Ability to draft clear and succinct communication items, reports, documents and correspondence. Maturity of judgement, initiative and creativity. Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. Understanding of the United Nations, including WMO programmes and activities and international organization processes would be an advantage. Ability to foster team spirit, international cooperation and to work in a multicultural environment.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
Possibility of renewal subject to the availability of funds and pending satisfactory performance after an initial probationary period of one year which can be extended up to a maximum of two years.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 64121

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 51810 (in addition to the net base salary)
