DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the overall guidance of Head, Hydrological and Water Resources Services (H/HWR) Division, and the Director, Hydrology, Water and Cryosphere Branch (D/HWC) Branch, the PO/HWR reports to the Programme Management Officer of Hydrological Forecasting Unit. The incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Global: contribute to the implementation of the Early Warnings of the hydrological hazards in within MHEWS environment with particular focus on floods;

(b) Regional and local: Coordinate, assess, develop and implement in partnership flood forecasting activities and projects initially in Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Haiti, Barbados, Antigua Barbuda and Guatemala;

(c) Adapt to diverse operational conditions and propose innovative solutions for hydromet value-chain application, impact-based flood forecasting and MHEWS;

(d) Foster a positive team environment by promoting good attitudes and effective teamwork;

(e) Ensure consistency and clear communication in project-related documentation;

(f) Collaborate with experts and team members to enhance integrated flood management strategies;

(g) Assist the Programme Manager and superiors in other Hydrological Forecasting unit tasks as required;

(h) Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in operational hydrology, water resources, hydrogeology, environmental sciences or related field. A Doctorate/PhD degree related to the subject matter would be advantageous and add to the professional experience.

Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in projects or programmes related to operational hydrology and water resources and applications.

- Expertise in flood forecasting processes, techniques and tools.
- Ability to coordinate and collaborate with diverse experts and team members.
- Mental flexibility and adaptability to different operational environments.
- Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical information clearly and effectively.
- Problem-solving skills to address challenges related to integrated flood management effectively.
- High sense of integrity, responsibility, and maturity of judgment; ability to work autonomously.
- Good level of initiative and creativity; demonstrated ability to plan, organize and manage multiple workloads.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to foster diversity and team spirit.


Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
This position is funded from a Trust Fund. Filling of this position is subject to funding availability and the initial appointment will be for a period of one year. Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds in the Trust Fund.
SALARY AND ALLOWANCES

Annual net base salary on initial appointment is: US$ 64121

Annual post adjustment on initial salary is: US$ 57517 (in addition to the net base salary)
