DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

LSP is in the second phase of its digitization project focused on the scanning and metadata creation for publications stored in hard copy to be digitized and included in WMO e-Library. The goal of the digitization project to ensure that all WMO publications are digitally preserved and made available WMO Members, staff, future generations of scientists and researchers, and the broader public.

The consultant will be expected to:

- Scan and upload WMO publications and other materials, as required, to e-Library;

- Update metadata for existing records of scanned publications in e-Library or create new records for publications that are missing in e-Library, as necessary;

- Conduct a control check of e-Library records to identify missing pdfs, low quality scans, broken links, publications that require OCR (Optical Character Recognition), and any other inconsistencies;

- Perform OCR of publications identified as requiring OCRing or re-OCRing in the language(s) of publication;

- Conduct research on online digital collections to identify WMO publications that already exist electronically but are missing in e-Library and add them accordingly;

- Assist the Library Team with other tasks related to e-Library, as required;

- Final report on the tasks performed;

- Electronic files (PDFs) of scanned WMO publications and other required materials with OCRing per language(s) of publication and bookmarks generated from table of contents or heading styles, where available;

- Scanned publications uploaded to e-Library with accurate metadata added according to WMO standards;

- Harmonized metadata in e-Library between added entries and existing records;

- Publications in e-Library lacking OCR or having poor OCR quality identified and re-OCRed accordingly;

- WMO publications missing in e-Library but available on other online platforms (e.g. Community Platform) identified and added to e-Library;

- Updated inventory of physical publications that have been scanned or remain to be processed;

- Carry out other relevant duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education
University degree or certification in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or related field.

Experience
At least 3 years of professional experience of working with digital and physical archives, libraries and/or records repositories, of which at least 1 year was with an international organization.

Other requirements
- Knowledge of library and archival databases and/or management systems;

- Knowledge of physical library and archival collections;

- Knowledge of metadata standards, creation, and description of digital resources;

- Ability to lift around 6 kg.

Languages
Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of the Organization would be an advantage.

(Note: The official languages of the Organization are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.)
