DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) is an intergovernmental partnership whose mission is to make Earth Intelligence a public good, ensuring that governments, businesses, and society have access to the data and insights required to support informed and impactful decisions for people, planet, and nature.

GEO seeks a consultant to support the Global Ecosystems Atlas initiative. The Global Ecosystems Atlas is a collaborative effort to build the world's most comprehensive and standardised resource on the global distribution, condition, and change of ecosystems. The initiative is entering its Foundation for Market Fit phase, transitioning from technical development to real-world usability testing with business and finance users. This phase focuses on assessing practical relevance of the Ecosystems Atlas dataset/data service, understanding constraints and value in operational use, and generating evidence to inform its evolution and adoption at scale.

The purpose of this consultancy is to support the initiative during this phase by leading engagement with business and finance sector users, coordinating early-adopter usability testing, and synthesizing evidence and insights to inform the Global Ecosystems Atlas adoption, evolution, and external positioning.

Under the supervision of the GEO Secretariat Director, the consultant will perform the following tasks:

1. Analyse and document how businesses and financial institutions currently operationalize nature-related frameworks and use ecosystem data, identifying value gaps and friction points in workflows.
2. Differentiate requirements, workflows, and decision contexts across distinct user groups.
3. Secure and lead 3-5 early-adopter collaborations to test the Global Ecosystems Atlas dataset and data service within real-world workflows.
4. Lead senior-level partner engagement, onboarding, and coordination, including collaboration agreements and structured feedback processes.
5. Design and oversee usability testing of the Atlas beta dataset, coordinating closely with the Global Ecosystems Atlas technical team.
6. Assess how the Global Ecosystems Atlas data affects decision-making, disclosures, compliance, and risk management processes.
7. Lead development of a flagship thought-leadership paper with co-authoring partners, drawing on evidence from early-adopter usability testing and use-case development. Coordinate partner inputs and support drafting and review processes to ensure analytical quality, alignment with Global Ecosystems Atlas positioning, and accurate representation of pilot findings.
8. Translate user feedback into recommendations for the Global Ecosystems Atlas dataset evolution and adoption at scale.
9. Shape key messages and content for a Global Ecosystems Atlas business roadshow, and coordinate with Global Ecosystems Atlas communications team on key visibility moments, including CBD COP17, Global Nature Positive Summit, and the WEF Annual Meeting 2027.
